Research Center for Artificial Photosynthesis (ReCAP) opening ceremony
On 18 June 2013 the Osaka City University Research Center for Artificial Photosynthesis (ReCAP) was officially opened. ReCAP will carry out research to explain the process of photosynthesis. Its cutting-edge research will focus on the manganese cluster, a key element in the photosynthesis process, of which the molecular structure was clarified by the center’s Director Professor Kamiya (receiver of the 2012 Asahi Award). The center is an industry-university collaboration, in which researchers of Osaka City University and the business world will join forces to successfully develop the much longed-for artificial photosynthesis technology.?
■Artificial photosynthesis is a technology that could greatly contribute to the solution of worldwide energy and environmental problems. Through the use of sunlight, low-carbon fuels like hydrogen and methanol can be created to replace fossil fuels such as gasoline, thereby decreasing carbon dioxide.
